Leatrice "Lee" Thomas was born on May 18, 1946, the fourth son and sixth child of the late Mr. & Mrs. Hosie & Willie Ree (Walton) Thomas Sr. of Vicksburg, Mississippi. He entered eternal rest on November 27, 2016 at his home in Holt, Michigan.
He attended elementary and three years of high school in Vicksburg, MS where he was a member of the Holy Hill Baptist Church. He continued to attend class reunions in Mississippi and maintained a close friendship with his classmates. After relocating to Albion in 1963, where he graduated from Albion High School in 1964. He joined Bethel Baptist church and was a choir director and lead singer during this time. In 1965, Lee was drafted to the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. After an honorable discharge in 1967, he moved to Lansing where he attended and graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor's in Urban Development and Political Science. Upon graduation, he moved to the Detroit area and began his career at General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAS). In 1992, GMAC relocated Lee to the greater Lansing area where he chose to reside in Holt through his retirement from GMAS in 2008 after 28 years of service.
Mr. Thomas was a self-motivated individual who did wonderful carpentry work. He was also one who was willing to help anyone at any time neither expecting nor getting any accolades. He was the father of Wanda Marie Kemp. He later married and divorced Ms. Sarah (Brown) Thomas and to this union one son, Jason Lee Thomas, was born. He was a kind hearted, unselfish and caring man with a great smile and even greater heart all the while being a single parent who was involved in every aspect of his children's lives as best he could. His quality of life was diminished greatly during the past few years as he struggled with diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis, yet he never missed an opportunity to join his family for many dinners and celebrations.
He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Charles, Cornelius and Larry Thomas; his adopted father, Charles Spicer, Sr.
He leaves to cherish his memories, a daughter, Wanda Marie Kemp, Albion; a son, Jason (Betsy) Thomas, Portage and three grandchildren, Chante, Zy'Airh and Za'Riah Kemp of Albion. Also surviving are one brother Hosie Thomas Jr., of Vicksburg; three sisters, Catherine Brown, Joyce Spicer of Albion and Helen (Sammy) Walton of Vicksburg. He is also survived by many nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends including the Walton, Lewis, Parker, London, Spicer, Spratley and Brown families. Among his many lifelong friends included Elijah Evans, Angelia Love, Lois Knight, Ed Sargent, Norbert Fernandez, Sarah Thomas and Mr. & Mrs. Gregg Saur.
He will be missed greatly by those who knew him best and those who called him Friend.
REST IN PEACE, YOU HAVE EARNED YOUR WINGS.
